THE SHOW

Striking Performance Poetry, Disarming comedy, and a celebration of Gender Fluidity from a part-time Transwoman playfully establishing her voice.

Alice d’Lumiere generally prefers to go unnoticed; she wants to be an ordinary woman on the train, or in the supermarket; she's happy to be anonymous. However, she's also a performer; cursed with an occasional, but irresistible desire to speak up, stand out and ultimately become the Fairy on Top of the Tree. “Speaking Out and Fitting In!” is a work in verse and prose, with flashes of cabaret and aerial burlesque.

Alice explores the wonderful and occasionally counter-intuitive, position of the gender-fluid individual striving to fit into another gender, whilst needing to establish a unique, personal voice.

Music by Tina Gooding. Movement Director Angelica Bangs.

WARNING - MAY CONTAIN STOCKINGED LEGS AND TROCHAIC FEET!

“Speaking Out…” and its associated series of workshops are available for booking for Theatres and Arts Centres.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

“One of the best evenings we’ve had at Colchester Arts Centre”

“Thank you for a funny, aerial, beautifully dressed… wonderful evening”

“Absolutely wonderful! I loved every minute!"

“"Had a great night seeing Alice d’Lumiere perform at the Colchester Arts Centre. Some very powerful pieces about standing out, whilst fitting in. Breaking down the barriers of gender, age and social class. Wonderful stuff!"

“I really did love it, and I feel it needs to be seen by as many people as possible, so I do hope it will tour! Whilst the show was of course wildly entertaining, I think there is a very important discussion throughout that many will benefit from. I am grateful that you shared your experiences and made me think. I found the whole evening had incredible charm and was very captivated by your storytelling so here's to its continued success!”

“Pure entertainment and inspiring on many levels:"

“Surprises abound and she entertains with her wry humour; showing us all what it is to be a woman. Burlesque, cabaret, beautiful poetry, and childhood dreams coming true is what you can expect.”

“Playful, kind, occasionally bawdy, but always considerate, Speaking out and fitting In! is a one-person show that fluidly moves through gender and identity, exploring (and occasionally exploding) preconceptions. Refusing to be put in a box, yet speaking outspokenly from an exquisitely expensive museum cabinet, Alice d’Lumiere wears their contradictions and complexity with verve and style.”

“Glorious…

funny and on point…

a show that, for me, had two main strengths. The first is the voice itself. Alice and her male counterpart, Darren Gooding, explore many voices in the search for her own, there’s a terrific Eddie Izzard riff that also shows great impressionist skills too! Alice’s voice is gentle, polite, but is no less powerful, proving that a voice doesn’t need to rage to have a great impact. The second point is kindness. It’s a show created with care and compassion, and we feel welcomed into it”
